影片讲述了两位当代中国女性面对社会固存的规训与传统观念，寻求自我突破、独立与成长的故事。                                                                      　　女书是一千多年来在女子间秘密相传的文字，一代代的女性在这种独一无二的文字中，获得了彼此的情谊与相互支持的力量。片中女性皆因与女书结缘而展开了新的生活命运。胡欣是江永女书最年轻的传承人之一，经历一段婚姻的结束之后，她在“传统女性”和“现代女性”之间左冲右突；而思慕是一位都市女性，自学成为一名女书艺术家。思慕在开明的家庭氛围中长大，这会让她在爱情、生活的现实考量，以及自我的热爱与追求之间，如何取舍又何去何从？最终影片的两位主人公在女书的启示下，在各自人生的重要关口，努力成长为更好的自己。
